Step Back in Time in a True Medieval Village
Monte San Savino’s history dates back to the Etruscan era, but it flourished in the Middle Ages, and much of its Renaissance architecture remains beautifully intact today. Walking through its streets, you’ll pass ancient stone walls, hidden alleys, and stunning piazzas, all leading to some of its most famous landmarks.
Highlights of Monte San Savino:
🏛 The Cisterna (Cistern of Monte San Savino) – One of the town’s most iconic sights, this ancient water cistern has been part of Monte San Savino’s history for centuries, reflecting the town’s importance as a strategic settlement.
🏰 The Former Prison – Looking for something a little different? You can visit the old town prison, a fascinating (and slightly eerie) place that gives insight into medieval justice and daily life in historic Tuscany.
⛪ Sant’Agostino Church & Loggia dei Mercanti – A stunning example of Monte San Savino’s Renaissance beauty, this church features impressive frescoes and a peaceful atmosphere, while the Loggia dei Mercanti, with its elegant arches, is a great spot for photos.
🌿 Relaxing Walks & Stunning Views – Monte San Savino is made for slow travel. Wander its charming streets, stop for a coffee in Piazza Gamurrini, or simply soak in the views of the rolling Tuscan countryside from the town’s scenic overlooks.
Festivals & Local Traditions
Monte San Savino knows how to celebrate, and if you visit during the right time, you might catch one of its incredible local festivals:
🔥 Sagra della Porchetta (September) – Monte San Savino is famous for its porchetta, and every September, the town hosts a festival celebrating this delicious slow-roasted pork dish. Think crispy skin, juicy meat, and a festival full of food, wine, and local culture. (second week of September)
🎭 Historical Reenactments & Medieval Events – Throughout the year, Monte San Savino hosts historical festivals, where locals dress in medieval costumes, parades fill the streets, and you get a true taste of the town’s past.
Notte del Conte Baldovino: Held during the last two Saturdays of June, this historical reenactment commemorates Count Baldovino, the town's feudal lord from 1550 to 1556. The event features games, parades, and medieval festivities.
🍷 Food & Wine Events – From truffle festivals to wine tastings, there’s always something happening in Monte San Savino for food lovers.
